The Critical First Step of Every Flight
Before any passenger steps foot onto the aircraft, the cabin crew must gather for one of the most important phases of their duty: the pre-flight briefing.
Led by the Cabin Senior or Purser, this meeting sets the tone for the entire flight. It ensures the whole team is aligned on safety procedures, service protocols, and the specific dynamics of the upcoming journey.
Key Elements Discussed in a Briefing:
- Safety & Emergency Procedures (SEP): The Purser will ask the crew rapid-fire questions to test their knowledge on emergency equipment locations, firefighting, or evacuation commands.
- Flight Particulars: The Captain often joins to provide the flight time, expected weather conditions, and any anticipated turbulence en route.
- Passenger Profiling: The crew reviews the passenger manifest to identify VIPs, unaccompanied minors, or passengers requiring special medical assistance or wheelchairs.
- Service Flow & Catering: Allocating who is working in which cabin (Economy, Business, First) and reviewing special meal requests (e.g., vegan, gluten-free, or religious meals).
A successful flight is built on the foundation of a thorough briefing. It transforms a group of individual flight attendants into a synchronized, highly-aware team ready for any scenario.
